The 2009 regular pheasant season opens at noon on Saturday. Clear skies and highs in the 40s and 50s are expected for the opening weekend with winds from the south at 15 to 20 mph across the state.
Crops still in the field could add to the difficulty for hunters in the start of South Dakota's pheasant season, which opens at noon Saturday and runs through Jan. 3.
A summer brood survey by the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks The counted an average of 6.32 pheasants per mile in 2009 as part of its annual pheasant brood survey, the fourth highest statewide count in the past 45 years.
