CHEYENNE - In the coming weeks, young hunters will have numerous opportunities to pursue pheasants in Wyoming during special hunts that are only available for youth.
Some of the more popular youth pheasant hunting opportunities are on Game and Fish Wildlife Habitat Management areas (WHMA) or hunt units managed and/or stocked with pheasants from Game and Fish bird farms. In southeast Wyoming, the hunts on the Springer WHMA near Yoder offer opportunities coming up during the latter part of October and early November. The drawing for the Springer hunt has been held but numerous openings remain for the youth hunt dates of Oct. 25 and Nov. 2. Youth hunts are also available in the Glendo Reservoir area some 30 miles north of Wheatland and differ from the Springer hunt in that no hunt permit for a specific day is required. Youth hunt days at Glendo are Nov. 8, 15, 22 and 29.
For those in central Wyoming and the Big Horn Basin, there are youth hunts on the Sand Mesa WHMA near Riverton and the Yellowtail WHMA near Lovell. The youth hunt day for these areas is Nov. 21. A description of lands where these hunts will take place is included in the current Upland Bird Regulations pamphlet.
Those eligible for these hunts include any youth who has not attained the age of 18 before Oct. 1 of this year. Resident youth under 14 do not need a bird license, but all hunters, regardless of age, must have the pheasant management permit to participate in these hunts. Wyoming does not have a minimum age for bird or small game hunting, but hunter education certification is required of youth or the Hunter Mentor Program may also be an option for those new hunters who have not yet taken a hunter education course. Information on the Hunter Mentor Program is available on the Game and Fish Web site http://gf.state.wy.us.
Questions on these hunts can be directed to Game and Fish Regional offices or the Game and Fish headquarters in Cheyenne at (307) 777-4600.
