LINCOLN, Neb. – Pheasant hunting season opens in Nebraska on Saturday, Oct. 25 and hunters should find good opportunities to bag birds across the state.
Summer surveys showed that the statewide pheasant population is similar to last year. The southwest and northeast regions of the state not only have the highest number of pheasant hunters, but they also have the highest abundance of pheasants. The southwest and Panhandle regions showed the highest gains in bird populations from last year, according to the Rural Mail Carrier Survey.
"Actually, there are plenty of pheasants out there, but a hunter has to be in the field to have a chance of harvesting one," said Kirk Nelson, assistant director of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.
"The key to hunting pheasants is being out in the field actively pursuing them," Nelson said. "They aren't going to come to you."
Pheasant season ends Jan. 31, 2009. The daily bag limit is three birds and the possession limit is 12.
The following hunting seasons open Oct. 25:
Small game – cock pheasant, quail and partridge;
Waterfowl – dark goose (Canada and brant), East, Platte River and Niobrara units; duck, Low Plains Late Unit; and pintail and canvasback, Low Plains Late Unit.
A complete listing of all of Nebraska's public hunting areas is included in the 2008 Nebraska Guide to Hunting and Public Lands booklet, available from any Commission office or any of 900 permit agents across the state. Also pick up a copy of the 2008 CRP-Management Access Program (CRP-MAP) Atlas. The same information is available on the Commission's Web site at OutdoorNebraska.org. Permits may be purchased online.
"I'll guarantee you there are more than enough roosters out there to provide enjoyable hunting for everyone who goes out," Nelson said. "I can't promise that everyone will get their limit, but I can guarantee that the hunters who do go out will have a lot better chance of getting a bird than someone who stays at home and doesn't go out at all. And, those who do go will enjoy the time they spend hunting."
