FARIBAULT, MN - Conservationists from Rice County, Minnesota have formed the state's 70th chapter of Pheasants Forever (PF).

The new group is excited about Saturday's pheasant hunting opener and is committed to ensuring that Minnesota's pheasant populations continue to have quality habitat on the ground.

The new chapter invites the public and media to attend their next meeting on Tuesday, October 17th.

"This Saturday has all the makings of a memorable pheasant hunting opener," reported Dan Deanovic, the Rice County Chapter's newly elected recruitment chairman and Northfield resident.

"As a pheasant hunter, I realize that the quality habitat on the ground is why we have birds back in Minnesota. Pheasants Forever has been a big part of that habitat effort. Volunteering to help start this new chapter is my way of doing my part as a pheasant hunter and conservationist. I care about making sure my kids grow up to enjoy many more opening days like this Saturday is sure to be."

Since the organization was founded in Saint Paul in 1982, PF has spent nearly $200 million on habitat projects benefiting 4 million acres for wildlife and natural resources across the continent.

Minnesota's 70 PF chapters and 22,000 members have spent $23.8 million on 20,000 habitat projects, benefiting 169,763 acres in that same time.

"Although most people would consider Rice County a suburban metro area, we do have pockets of good quality wildlife habitat. And, we have the opportunities to add more habitat right here in Rice County," explained Deanovic.

"I grew up here in Rice County as a pheasant hunter and it's important to me to help provide those same opportunities to my three 10-year old children."

PF and its quail division, Quail Forever, are the only national conservation organizations that empower local chapters with the responsibility to determine how 100 percent of their locally raised conservation funds will be spent.

This local control allows members to see the fruits of their chapter efforts in their own communities, while belonging to a national organization with a voice on federal conservation policy in Washington D.C. In addition to Deanovic, the chapter elected officers at the last meeting.

Jeremy Eller of Faribault was elected as the chapter's chair. Jeff Johnstad of Faribault is the vice chair. Terry Dreblow of Savage is the treasurer. Dean Turek of Montgomery is the chapter's habitat chair. Tony Luikens of Lonsdale is the banquet chair.

And, Brian Bristol of Webster is the youth & education chair. The Rice County PF Chapter plans to hold their next meeting on Tuesday, October 17th at the American Legion in Faribault beginning at 7:00PM. The public and media are invited to attend.
