Default What Did My Dog Smell???

Hunting along a fence next to a field of standing corn yesterday. There was a low area in the field w/ some water in it. About 60 yards straight upwind of us, about a half dozen mallards sprang from the puddle. Seconds later, Buzz went nuts briefly, but never figured out what he was smelling. I don't think he smelled a pheasant that had since run into the corn, as the big puddle came right up to the fence. I think he smelled those mallards. Anyone else experience this?

Bear in mind, this is the same spaniel who once got real hot, finally dove into a weed clump & emerged with this. Part of an ice cream sandwich wrapper.

Not this time. He HAS been downwind of me, though, in the past. And while my scent may be "foul", it hasn't seemed to excite him the same way as "fowl".
