Default Preliminary National Hunting & Fishing Survey released...not good news for hunting

The US Fish & Wildlife Service released their National Hunting & Fishing Survey recently and it's not good news for hunting.

The survey is done every 5 years. Since 2011, the number of hunters is down by 2 million hunters. Hunting expenditures were down by over 29%.

Time is getting short to turn this thing around.

Unfortunately I would say folks that enjoy hunting and fishing is a dying breed. Take your pick of reasons. The movement of populations from rural to larger cities. Opportunities to get outdoors growing smaller by the day. Less options as to where to hunt or fish. I'll use my home state of SD for an example. Lakes are being closed down to public access as well as hunting becoming more and more commercialised. You could also look at economical limitations and the growing wage gap and shrinking middle class. Thus making hunting and fishing too expensive for some who may want to do those things.

I've sat in on many discussions regarding what, if anything, can be done about the decrease in hunting participation. I'd appreciate hearing thoughts from those on this board. The problems, as noted above, are many. But, what can be done to reverse the trend. What should state fish and wildlife agencies be doing? What can we, as individual hunters, do to reverse the trend?
