    Nick and Bleu, That hen looks like a common merganser to me????? No hood??? I dont know.

    I think it's a Hooded Merganser hen. Common Merganser hen's have lighter/grey colored bodies. The Merganser hen in the photo may have her "hood" feathers laying (flat) against her head and neck, plus the angle of her head may be hiding it a bit too.

    Also (for future reference) common Merganser hen's have "hoods" too, like Hooded Merganser hens.

    I hope you were able to make heads/tails of all that. lol

    Looks too small for a common to me.I have shot several Hoodies both hens and drakes and a few Commons and Red breasted.

    Those are really great pictures!! The one w/ the blue heron & mallard, it looks like the heron was photo-shopped. And the coons! Wow. Thanks for sharing!

    Yes it is the mallards chased the wood ducks off but the mergansers stayed but have just seen mallards lately they are moulting but babies showed this week
