South Dakota Governor's Hunt Set for This Weekend
South Dakota's Invitational Governor's Hunt is set to take place this weekend in central South Dakota. The Governor's hunt, based out of Pierre, SD has been an annual event since the early 80's when it was resurrected by Governor Bill Janklow as an economic development effort to bring in business leaders interested in relocating their company to South Dakota.Pheasant brood counts indicate that pheasant numbers in South Dakota have returned to levels below the remarkable high counts of the past few years. However, the pheasant population in the main part of the state's pheasant range will still provide quality hunting opportunities. From 2003 through 2010, the statewide pheasant-per-mile index was at levels not seen in the previous 40 years. The index this year is 46 percent lower than the 2010 index and 41 percent lower than the average of the past 10 years.
Brownback Proposes Kansas Governor's Invitational Pheasant Hunt - Oct. 25, 2010
Kansas may soon have an Inviitational Governor's Hunt of its own. If Republican Sam Brownback wins the race for Governor in Kansas he said that he will begin a Governor's Invitational Pheasant Hunt as a way to make Kansas the top pheasant hunting destination in the midwest.

Upland bird hunters who thought we had a good season last year should be pleased to know that the trend should continue in 2010. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) has completed summer surveys, and the results, compiled in the Upland Bird Hunting Forecast, suggest that Kansas will have abundant upland birds for the second year in a row. Although some hunters have been concerned about a significant amount of federal Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land turned back to crop production, this apparently has not hurt bird production to date.

PIERRE, S.D. - A proposal to increase the daily bag limit of pheasants from 3 to 5 was defeated at the monthly GFP Commission meeting in Pierre on Thursday. A proposal needs five votes from the eight member Commission to become rule, but there were only four supporting the measure so the proposal failed to pass.
