Winter Habitat Key to Pheasant Survival

PIERRE, S.D. - The winter of 2009-2010 is already one for the record books, leaving many South Dakotans wondering how their state bird, the pheasant, can survive the elements.

Pheasant Proposal Fails - Dec. 03, 2009
PIERRE, S.D. - A proposal to increase the daily bag limit of pheasants from 3 to 5 was defeated at the monthly GFP Commission meeting in Pierre on Thursday. A proposal needs five votes from the eight member Commission to become rule, but there were only four supporting the measure so the proposal failed to pass.

Why No Pheasants in Southeast Kansas? - Dec. 03, 2009
PRATT - With Kansas annually ranking in the top three states in the nation for pheasant hunting, hunters often ask why this popular game bird cannot be found in southeast Kansas. Like all wildlife, pheasants need four things to survive: food, water, cover, and space. If these things are not present in the proper mix for an individual species, it will not thrive. But sometimes it can be more complicated than that.

Pheasant Limits May Increase In December - Nov. 25, 2009
Pierre, S.D. - Due to the delayed harvest of crops this fall, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission intends to act at its Dec. 3-4 meeting in Pierre on a proposal to raise the three-bird daily pheasant bag limit to five cock pheasants daily.

Pheasants Forever Adds Conservation Program Experts in North Dakota - Nov. 23, 2009
Pheasants Forever is expanding its Farm Bill Biologist program in North Dakota with the addition of two new positions created in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and local Soil Conservation Districts. Matthew Olson of Fort Ransom, North Dakota, is the new Farm Bill Biologist based out of Forman and Jeff Potts of Watertown, South Dakota, is the new Farm Bill Biologist based out of Dickinson.

Sign Up for New South Dakota CRP Practice Begins November 23rd - Nov. 18, 2009
Sign up for South Dakota's newest Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) practice begins on Monday, November 23rd. The goal of South Dakota's targeted Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program, or CREP, is to enroll up to 100,000 acres of eligible agricultural land located in the James River Watershed. Acres enrolled in the South Dakota CREP will also be enrolled in the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Walk-In Area Program for hunting and fishing access.

PF Adds Four Farm Bill Experts to Deliver Conservation Programs in Iowa - Nov. 05, 2009
Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have expanded its Farm Bill Biologist program into the state of Iowa with the hiring of four new positions. The new Farm Bill Biologist positions cover nine counties and will improve how conservation programs are delivered to landowners and producers. The positions come at an especially critical juncture for Iowa, where over 450,000 acres have expired from the wildlife-friendly Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) in the past five years.
