Minnesota's Gubernatorial elect Mark Dayton is on the record with the West Central Tribune newspaper, pledging the Montevideo, Minnesota area will be the site of the state's first ever Governor's pheasant opener.
Cynics may paint the upcoming event as nothing more than a political bird dog and pony show, but even in Minnesota – "The Land of 10,000 Lakes" – the mainstream media largely ignores outdoor stories. And isn't a political bird dog and pony show better than your run-of-the-mill dog and pony show?
Any chance, staged as it may be, to talk to a larger audience (Minnesota has 100,000 pheasant hunters compared to more than 5 million residents) about the significance of pheasant hunting and, just as important, conservation, is a valuable one in this blogger's opinion. A press conference outdoors is better than one indoors, right?
Other states, including South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska, hold or have held governor's pheasant hunts, and Kansas Governor-elect Sam Brownback has stated he would like to see one materialize in his state as well.
