Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever announce Adam Kester of Clearwater, Nebraska, as its newest Farm Bill Biologist, providing assistance in Grant, Hamilton, Kearny, Finney, Stanton, Haskell, Morton, Stevens and Seward counties in Kansas. Kester will provide wildlife conservation and land-use consulting to area farmers and ranchers.
The new Farm Bill Biologist position is the result of Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever's Grassroots Conservation Campaign in Kansas. The campaign is a partnership between the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, 40 Kansas Pheasants Forever chapters, 11 Kansas Quail Forever chapters, corporations, foundations and individuals to improve 1 million Kansas acres for pheasants, quail and other wildlife.
Pheasants Forever's Farm Bill Biologist program is designed to provide technical assistance to farmers and ranchers – through one-on-one consulting – about the benefits of conservation programs (such as the Conservation Reserve Program). It also serves to assist farmers and ranchers through implementation of various programs and practices. Pheasants Forever began employing Farm Bill Biologists in 2003, and now has more than 65 such biologists working in 11 states – Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Farm Bill Biologists have contacted and consulted with over 35,000 landowners, resulting in the improvement of more than 1.34 million acres of land for wildlife.
Kester is Kansas's fifth Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist and the first in the southwest corner of the state. "Adam is a very promising young biologist who will serve the people of the Ulysses area well," said Steve Riley, Farm Bill Wildlife Biologist Manager for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever, "This position is a positive one for the upland birds of southwest Kansas, which include pheasant, bobwhite quail, prairie chickens and even scaled quail."
Kester earned his Bachelor of Science in Wildlife from the University of Nebraska. Kester gained experience working several wildlife jobs in Nebraska and Wyoming. He will work out of the Grant County USDA Service Center in Ulysses, Kansas. He can be reached at (620) 356-1744 and akester@pheasantsforever.org.
