Hunting Season Begins Sept. 1 Across New Mexico

SANTA FE, NM – Hunting seasons for doves, blue grouse, band-tailed pigeons and squirrels opens Sept. 1 in many parts of New Mexico.
This year's first archery seasons for deer and elk also begin Sept. 1, with big-game seasons for various weapons scheduled into January. Season dates, hunting areas, bag limits and other regulations vary by species.
Hunters are encouraged to consult the Department of Game and Fish rules and information publications, available at license vendors statewide, at Department offices in Raton, Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Roswell and Santa Fe, and online at www.wildlife.state.nm.us .
Hunters are reminded that the application deadline is Sept. 9 for all sandhill crane hunts and youth waterfowl hunts at Bernardo Wildlife Management Area.
Application deadline is Nov. 4 for Bernardo light goose special permit hunts, youth-only light goose hunts and special permit pheasant hunts, including a new youth hunt at Casa Colorada Wildlife Management Area.
There is no public-land hunting for pheasants this season in Valencia County, although applications for private-land hunts are unlimited.
Department of Game and Fish conservation officers will be on patrol and at roadblocks statewide through the hunting seasons, checking hunters' licenses and making sure wildlife laws and other state laws are observed.
Officers with the New Mexico State Police, county sheriff's departments, the New Mexico Livestock Board, U.S. Border Patrol and others will assist conservation officers at the roadblocks.
People who enjoy outdoor recreation on New Mexico's public or private lands are encouraged to be aware of hunting seasons and areas, to be safe by wearing bright clothing while hiking, and to be respectful of others' rights to pursue the recreational activity of their choice.
