Dog movies or training films?

For all the interest I have in bird dogs, haven't found many dog-oriented hunting movies, and only few (old) training tapes or dvds. Grits Grisham actually did one of the best.

Anyone know of such?

These days you can find some pretty decent short videos on dog training if you search on youtube. Also, I found some helpful videos online here:

I'm stuck with dial-up out here, so youtube and streaming vids are really not an option. But, thank you for your suggestion.

There's a VERY old Disney movie entitled, "The Biscuit Eater," featuring a GWP. But it is much more a Disney movie than anything else.

Odd, isn't it? In spite of the interest in hunting dogs, few movies feature them.

I went to the library and borrowed the book "Gun Dog" and the video from the same author and same name. It worked well for me. The key was to do 10 minutes of training in the morning and ten minutes in the evening. That was all it took to get a great hunting dog!

I have a couple pointing DVDs and a couple retriever DVDs, and my only comment would be that I think some of the best dog trainers are crappy video hosts and editors. They seem like dog geniuses and have more training knowledge and experience than I could ever hope to get in a lifetime, but kind of lacking when it comes to presenting information in an efficient and organized way.

Speaking only about the videos I have seen, I would say that they are helpful, but I would pity the person who tried to use any one of them as their sole source of dog training information. Best idea would be to also get a good book and some occasional advice from a knowledgeable friend or even a site like this one.

Awesome dvd's! I have both, and have actually had John start four dogs for me. Great guy, maybe not the most entertaining to watch though. LOL

It's not a training video but there is also an old black & white movie called "Goodbye My Lady." The story is written by the same author who wrote "The Biscuit Eater".

Kind of a twist on a traditional hunting dog movie but it's one of my favorites, probably because it features a Basenji and I happen to own two. It's about a Basenji dog from a CT show kennel who somehow finds itself lost in the rural 1920's Mississippi swamps. Dog turns out to be a great- if unorthodox- bird dog. Has a funny looking point but scents birds at twice the distance of everyone else's "bird dog".

Great movie even if I am biased. IMO worth watching even if you have no particular fondness for Basenjis

I also like Where the Red Fern Grows. It's best known as a book but there are a couple movie versions out; an old and a newer remake, not terribly bad.
