Default Tallgrass prairie

If any of you happen to be passin' through Manhattan, KS, it is worth a stop at the new Flinthills Discovery Center. I took the family there on Wednesday and thought a few of the displays were pretty cool.

I got kind of a "cliff's notes" version of the past/present/future of the tallgrass prairie in this region of the USA. Couldn't leave without buying a couple books to further my education. The kiddos enjoyed it too, especially the theater with the wind, smoke, and snow.

Anyway, just sayin'...

A couple features on your favorite bird, the prairie chicken. I think bobwhite got snubbed.

Also had clear cylinders containing the root systems of different native grasses. I had no idea the roots went down so far. Over 10' deep in most cases.
