UPH get together or Spring kick off to Dog training and shooting.
Bring family and friends if you like.
If you don't have a dog perfect use mine. (He likes to run)
What would you guys think about meeting in Granite Falls MN April 2 at a game preserve?
$17.50 per bird Min. 4 birds per gun (ROOSTERS ONLY No Hens) We as a group can hunt all day no time limit. Large meeting room for us to use also. Could do a pot luck for lunch?
In town there is a casino rooms start around $90 a night.
PM me if you would like more detailed info.
Please respond if interested.
If we have interest I need to call the game farm to set a firm date & group size and maybe we can get discount group rates for those that will be staying over night.
I know there will be lots of questions but lets try to keep this FUN and Easy.

Lee, count me in. I'd also love to run my Brittany for anyone that doesn't have a dog or anyone that might want to hunt behind a pointer. Any ideas on a start time that day? I've got about a 3 hour drive so don't make it too early. :)

Zeb
I would like to wait for a couple weeks then I will tell them a rough number of people and ask questions then.
A start time is a good one I would have thought of that the night before.
Anymore questions post them up. Keep it easy
My better half as she says:rolleyes: will be going also so I hope other spouse's will be there.

Sounds fun, but I will not make it most likely. Trial season is on for me till June so I will be busy. I posted in the MN area before I saw this. Check out the idea I put up there too. It will be cheaper as well and I have a shooting preserve we can use here as well possibly so we may be able to avoid you sending in for free permits, but that is real easy too. Birds are 8-9 $ for either hens or roosters, and 4 bucks for pigeons if prefered. Any weekend most all summer long.

If you want to do a get together at your place this summer post a date. It sounds like fun I could bring quail or chuckers also if needed. I have a remote bird launcher we could use for the smaller pups.
I know the prices at the preserves are costly but I think Granite Falls is a good central location for a few of us. If you don't want to pay for birds but can show up shoot my birds while I work with the dog.
I think Zeb said he would buy us all drinks afterwards:D
If the date doesn't work for you and you can't make it thats alright.

goldeneye, I think you should continue going forward with your original plan at the preserve in Granite Falls. If there are only 5 or 6 of us that show up so be it. We'll run the dogs, shoot some pheasants and have a lot of fun. Some how I have a sneaky feeling that by the time the event comes to be you will have a few more people there.
Maybe we can also do something like FC has proposed after the first of June. Most trials should be done and hopefully the weather won't be too hot.
You guys just need to take a good plan and do it. You won't ever get everyone to agree.
Personally I'm looking forward to it. I get to run my dog, shoot some birds and have some great social time with my fellow hunters from this site. Doesn't get an better than that!

We are penciled in for April 2
I said we would like to start at noon. (Travel time for a few of us I thought this would be good )
There is no real end time.
I was told we can have the back room they can cater food if we would like.
They said we would get a couple strips of land? where we could run two dogs per one strip easy.
I have never been here before but I was told by a friend of mine to use them. They have got to be the easiest people to deal with.
Any questions let me know I am sure I will have to call them again anyway.

I've been working with Lee on this get together and when we get closer to the time we will be taking a head count on hunters and dogs. We will establish some simple guidelines for the event just to keep it organized. Depending on the number of dogs, we may have to limit the number of dogs in the field at any one time. I've got 2 dogs and I only plan on bringing one just to simplify things.
Until we have a better handle on the number coming we won't be able to determine an exact format of the event. Things may change depending on whether there are 6 guys there or 16. I'm sure everyone can understand that. The main thing we want to accomplish is to make it a fun and enjoyable event for everyone. We're still 2 1/2 months away from April 2nd so please bear with us.
I'm not trying to steal Lee's (goldeneye) thunder here since he is "The Man", just trying to help him.

Since we are unsure how this event if going to be formatted I would just like everyone with multiple dogs to be aware that you may, or may not, be able to run all your dogs. A lot is going to depend on how many people we end up with. Lee and I are hoping to get over to the preserve before April 2nd to get a better idea of how we can structure the hunt. Bear in mind that this will not be like a normal hunt for wild birds. We are dealing with planted birds in small (40 acre) parcels. Lots of unknowns at this point but we hope to have all the answers as we get closed to the date.
Right now I have a tally of 11 hunters, all with at least 1 dog. And there are 3 others with multiple dogs that might show up.

Funny thing about the weather in that area of Minnesota at that time of year. Even March can bring massive snow storms or like a number of years back. Tornado's struck Comfrey Mn and St. Peter in March.

Oh, believe me, we have discussed the weather and if all the current snow will be gone. But you just have to set a date and go for it. If we try to wait for the perfect day it will never happen. As I believe, goldeneye stated earlier, we do have a alternative date of April 16th if we are unable to do it on the 2nd.

Ken, that alternative date of April 16th is not in stone. We could consider the 23rd. I think goldeneye was concerned that if we got it too late that the farmers would be in the field. But I don't know how many of the guys coming are actually farmers. With all this snow April 2nd is seeming more improbable. but doing this at the preserve means we have to do it before April 30th. I have trials April 9th and 30th.
Guess it's best if we see how things are looking around mid March. We should have a better idea if April 2nd is totally out.

I stopped at the Minnesota Heartland Preserve this afternoon and visited with a couple of the guys. They were very friendly and more than willing to do whatever we want. Very accommodating. There is still quite a bit of snow there and they aren't letting anyone hunt at this time. Whether the fields will be okay by April 2nd is difficult to determine at this time. I am going to call them in a week to see how it looks and we will have to make a decision at that time.
I have a tentative format of how we could run our event and will post that later. I'll also post the list of guys that have either said they would come or that indicated they might come.

We first and foremost want to make this get together a fun event for all and an opportunity to personally meet one another. We also want to hold the event in a manner that when you are not in the field that you will have the opportunity to watch the other hunters and their dogs work. Since we have quite a few different breeds watching some of the other dogs should be fun. This is not a competition, simply and opportunity to get your dog in the field and shoot a few roosters. In order to have some semblance of order we so need a format for the event and a few simple rules. The following is what we have come up with:
The UPH Hunt
The hunt will take place at the Minnesota Heartland Preserve near Granite Falls, MN on April 2, 2011.
The Agenda
11:00 – Noon: We will have a lunch in the lodge and also discuss the format for the hunt and hunting safety.
Noon - 12:30: We will get organized and began the hunts.
After the Hunt: Time for beer/whiskey and socializing.
The Hunt
1. The hunts will take place on 2 fields approximately 40 acres in size.
2. We will run the fields in “braces” (consisting of 2 hunters per field). Each hunter will be allowed 1 dog, unless the bracemates agree to letting one or each of the hunters in that brace to use more than 1 dog.
3. The preserve will plant 8 pheasants in each field.
4. Once the birds are planted the 2 hunters will be allowed to hunt the field for 30 minutes or until the 8 pheasants are shot, which ever comes first. Additional time may be allowed to harvest all 8 birds.
5. Each hunter will shoot their own 4 birds, unless they agree to let their bracemate and dog(s) help them harvest the remainder of their birds.
6. Once the 8 birds have been harvested the hunters shall leash their dogs and leave the field. Then 8 more pheasants are planted for the next brace of hunters.
7. Hunters will not be allowed to watch the birds being planted prior running their brace.
The above format will allow those hunters not running a brace the opportunity to watch the other hunters and dogs work their respective fields.
Safety is of utmost importance.
1. All hunters will be required to wear and orange hat and one piece of orange apparel above the waist.
2. No shooting of birds on the ground.
3. If a bird flushes and for any reason a completely safe shot cannot be taken please let the bird go.
Remember, we are all here to have an enjoyable day in the field. Please respect your fellow hunters, and the employees, grounds & facilities of the preserve.

Here is the list of hunters I have that have said they are coming or possibly coming. Please let me know if there are any changes or omissions. I should have added to my previous post that the cost for the birds at the preserve is $17.50 per bird. $70 for your 4 birds.

If you want to be in the field at the same time as your girl friend and want someone to go along and be a dog handler I don't see that as a problem. You can pick whomever you would want. It would give you a chance to see a different breed work.

Sounds fun George. If it works out and I can go, I will show up for moral suport.:D I will not run a dog. I may mess around with a couple short training excersizes after everyone is done if time and situation permits. It would be nice to just meet everyone. I will guard the beer while you guys are gone. But count me out for birds and a hunt.

This would be a great chance for your GF to hunt with what ever dog she wants. Let her pick the dog. If she wants she can tag along with us shoot a bird or two. I just hope after this looooong winter my dog stills remembers a few things.

DakotaZeb & ALL,
I definitely plan on attending the April 2nd hunt. Been working lots of O.T.
I would be happy to be a dog handler if someone needs an extra dog afield.
I plan on coming with one dog. Could travel with two if requested to do so.
Looking forward to this event after a brutal winter.
If date is switched let me know asap on here or better yet a PM.
I will probably travel down in the wee hours FRiday night / Sat. morning.
It is 4 hours from my place to Mpls. area. I think I must be looking at about 6 hours DRIVING time as my best estimate.
George,
Will probably leave Victor home. He is my most experienced dog but does not care for pen raised birds. He points them, then just steps in & grabs them.
Wild birds he behaves himself. Will bring either Chase or Grady.

We were going to make a decision on the UPH Hunt by now but the weather has really thrown a wrench into things. I did visit with the Minnesota Heartland Preserve today and conditions are not good at this time. The forecast for the area is cold temps until the middle of next week so we likely will see little melting between now and then. The people at the preserve were not real optimistic about April 2nd. I have visited with Lee and we have decided to wait until the middle of next week before we make a final decision. If we are forced to cancel the April 2nd date our backup date is April 16th.
We appreciate everyone's patience in this matter but Mother Nature has really played a dirty trick on us. We would appreciate hearing from all the were planning to come and get your thoughts. So let us know.
In the meantime, pray for sun and warm temps! :)

Well Tbear and I got back from our hunt with the troops for our local PF chapter, we were at Caribou gun club in Le Sueur, and the cover was not to bad, the fields were a little wet depending on where they were. Some of the fields had a little bit of snow in them but most were clear of snow. I don't know what the melting is like down in granite, but where we were they had plenty of stuff to hunt and we had a group of 50 hunters, and they were using 6 different fields to hunt all of us. Tbear and I didn't get to guide a hunt because 6 people didn't show up because they were sick, so our secretary gave each of us 2 birds out in a field to go by ourselves. Well needless to say not a shot was fired and we got 3 out of 4, the one bird was smart and ran to the end of the field and flew, the others decided to try there luck holding really tight, and well they got caught. It was a great day though, hope we still get to go next weekend!

I'm still waiting to hear from several members and will send them a PM today to see if they are coming.
I want everyone to remember the cost for the hunt at the Minnesota Heartland Preserve with be $70 ($17.50 per bird, 4 bird minimum).
The plan is still to meet at the preserve around 11:00 AM, have some lunch and time to get to know one another. As for the lunch. Because our group is quite small and the preserve does not have food available, goldeneye and I have decided to bring lunch for everyone. We are planning on Sloppy Joe's, chips, a brownie or some type of bar and some bottled water. We will just charge everyone enough to cover our expenses. Shouldn't be more than $4-5 a person. Cheaper than having something catered. Does that sound okay to everyone???
As we get closer next week I will post all the final details.

Zeb, not sure if this matters or not but my gun is at the cabin for turkey season and I won't have a dog since I will be coming from the farm so unless you guys NEED a shooter it looks like I will be a full time spectator. Hope that's alright. Feel free to put me to work with event tasks when I'm onsite.

Okay people here's the official scoop for this coming Saturday, April 16th.
Minnesota Heartland Preserve
Granite Falls, MN
Located 1 1/2 miles north of Hwy. 212 on Hwy 23. The lodge is on the west side of the Hwy. You can't miss it.
http://www.minnesotaheartlandpreserve.com/
Plan to arrive at 11:00 AM. We will have a "Meet & Greet", time for some lunch and then decide how we want to handle the hunts.
If anyone is interested in shooting a round of trap prior to the hunt that is available at the lodge also. I think $8 for a round of 25. Bring your own shells or they have some there. I think it would kind of fun to shoot a round prior to taking to the field.
Make sure to wear Blaze Orange. It is a requirement of the preserve.
Lunch will be served between 11:00 & Noon. Sloppy Joe's, chips, brownies and beverage (pop & water). Cost will $3. Can't beat that!
Remember, SAFETY, SAFETY, SAFETY! This can never be stressed enough.
Weather forecast at this time for Saturday is partly sunny, breezy and a high of 44.
Here is a list of who I have coming:

It really sucks the big one!
Here's the current forecast for Granite Falls for Friday and Saturday from the National Weather Service:
Friday: Rain and snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Breezy, with a east northeast wind between 17 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Friday Night: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
Saturday: A chance of snow before 1pm, then a chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Let's take a quick poll of those that are planning to come. Do you still want to do this, or not?

There is a motel in Granite Falls called the Granite Falls Super Motel. It used to be a Super 8. There number is 320-564-4075.
There is also the Prairie's Edge Casino but it looks like they are full this weekend.
The preserve has a bunk house for $40 per night. You have bring your own bedding and towels.

Alright. Are you bringing presents for everyone? ;)
We've got 5" of wet heavy snow and it's still coming down. Sounds like most of it will be west of I29 so I hope Granite only gets a dusting. Suppose to be sunny and in the mid 40's tomorrow so it should melt fast.
I'm going to hit the road early in the AM regardless of conditions. Planned this for too long to be stopped now. Besides, I just finished making the Sloppy Joe mix and the vehicle it packed and ready to roll. See ya all there. I think we will have 14 if everyone shows up.

Just a reminder about lodging it you plan to stay in the Granite Falls area Saturday night. The Preserve has a bunk house you can stay at. It's $40 per night if there is 1-2 people or $100 for 4 people ($25 each). You need to bring your own bedding (sleeping bag & pillow) and a towel. I know fourtrax is planning to stay there Saturday night and would like someone to join him to cut down the cost.
Can you believe it. Less that 24 hours and we'll be shootin' some roosters!

We ended up with 11 hunters. Weather wasn't great but could have been worse. Really wouldn't of been too bad if it hadn't been for the strong NW wind. Cover was marginal and the birds were really running. Of the 44 birds released we harvested 26. Several guys took pictures so I'm sure there will be pics to follow. We all had a great time and it was nice to finally put some faces with the names.
I had my 8 year old Brittany along. A dog that hasn't retrieved one bird since she was 2 (long story). First bird she finds flushed wild and flew low so no shot. She chased it and the bird landed back in the cover about 100 yds out. I saw her run it down and figured I was going to have to walk over there to get it when here she came on a run with the bird and dropped it at my feet. I almost had a heart attack. Then she also retrieved the next bird to me also. But #3 she didn't bring back. I have no idea what go into her. Maybe she's not too old to FF.

I took the names and sent them to WebGuy. Last I heard he had the Flu and was getting back to work.

Sure it wasn't the 3.2 flu? I asked him 2 1/2 weeks ago to change the article and photo on the home page and that hasn't been done either. He said he was doing his taxes but April 17th was a long time ago.

Zeb and crew,
Yes, I had the flu and not the 3.2 flu. I also run a business and have employees, so as you can imagine, I have 100 things to do. So, before passing any judgements, please take that in consideration.
Also, if any of you guys want to help me do more technical things, please volunteer and I'll put you to work on this website.
