Water and coffee in the field, and an ice-cold beer at home once the birds are processed and the gear is stowed. I might slip a little Bailey's into my coffee thermos on special occasions...

Grampa always had some peppermint Snapps (sp?). It works pretty well for a quick warm up and has a low alcohol content. Gramps didn't wait until the hunt was over. That trend has evolved a bit over the generations. Crockett's explanation fits me a little better, except we usually have a cold beer while we're cleaning the birds. We obviously refrain from post-hunt drinking when we've taken some kids out.

I'm with the water and coffee group. You can alway have a little drink of something after the birds are processed. Alcohol in the field is reason enough for me to quit the hunt and never go with you again. Guns and Alcohol do not mix and nothing anyone can say will not change that fact.......Bob

I always carry water for myself and the dog while hunting and after the hunt I might have a Dr Pepper or Gateraid.

After the guns are sheathed for the day, I break out a bottle of W.L. Weller bourbon and pass it around. It is a well-received tonic after a long day in the field. Of course, no alcohol while we are hunting. Guns + alcohol = dangerous hunters.

Two bottles of water while hunting. One for me. One for the dog. Once the guns are away it is Jameson for me.

Cold beer or Jack Daniels. Both seem to hit the spot after a long day in the field.

Sir, that is an excellent prescription: "Repeat as necessary."

I pretty much quit drinking alcohol and pop so it will be water and maybe some gatorade. If the day is good I may slip in a MGD or a Miller Lite after the hunt is over.

Jack for bourbon or "The Famous Grouse" for Scotch. Either is acceptable........ only ice please. Never during the hunt and never around the kids. Be a gentleman please.

Best regards, and have a great season.

Makers Mark in the Red flask and Glenlivet 12 yr old Scotch in the Green flask. We never partake before or during the hunt...really not until everything is done and the GUNS are put away for the day. Their is usually some type of cigar that accompanies the end of the hunt "nip".

Just saw this thread.During the hunt it's H2O and Gatorade only. I do carry a flask bought in SD with a nice etching of a rooster on it and containing blackberry brandy-but only for after the hunt. We usually have a couple cold beers on a slow ride back to the Hotel driving the backroads and maybe a nip from the Flask. After getting back to the Hotel and dogs and gear and such squared away, we have a "brown one"-that would be a Brandy Manhatten-or 2.

Brit, 40 years ago you could bump the beer total up significantly:cheers:but now that I'm in my 60's that's about all I can handle-we are usually in bed by 9pm too.

Must be nice. In South Dakota we have an open container law that can be very expensive if caught. I'm told that open container infractions are the number one citation at game checks.

Landman, thanks for the info-I did not know that-we'll have to regroup and rethink on that habit. We have the same here too so I guess it's just not smart-if you get caught. Weird that you can drive around SD with an uncased, loaded shotgun but not a brewski, now for that you would get hung here-strictly taboo. I appreciate your comments:cheers:

Fine selections, old chap. Impeccable timing -- after the gunplay -- as well. Hunting, a pony or two of fine whiskey, and a cigar. Aaahh, the hunter's way of life.
