Projected corn harvest???

Does anyone know what the corn harvest looks like for South Central SD? Last year it seemed a bit late ...I was wondering what people who raised corn thought about when the corn would be out? I was planning on going the first week of November and didnt know if most of the corn would be run or not? Any thoughts???? Thanks guys...love the site and appreciate your help.

If you thought last year was late hold on. To give you an idea last year we were cutting silage at this time. This year we are at least one probably two weeks away. Even if an early frost comes there will be a lot of corn to run through the drier which slows stuff down.

I hate corn more all the time. Sounds like I should plan on hunting grouse until mid-November before switching to pheasants. Last year even in mid-November 90% of the corn where I hunt was still in the field.

Made the long drive through SD on Hwy 212 last weekend. My observations showed corn fields that were anywhere from 90% still green to 75% brown. Not sure what this means but I'm pretty sure there will still be a lot of unharvested corn at least until Nov 1 and probably longer.

South Central may be near normal, but east northeast will be well behind from what I have seen in my travels. The beans are drying up tho.

I'm hearing reports from a few SD land owners that they will be a bit behind on the corn.

They started picking beans last night near me and there was also a good frost last night. The corn looks to be a ways out though.

We are heading to Watertown to hunt on Nov 4th. Does anyone know if the feilds are still so wet with the beans and corn still in the fields?

Some beans, but not all, have been harvested. Virtually no corn is out due the extremely wet conditions. And I doubt you will see much more out by Nov. 4th.

Thanks for the update. I just spoke with a buddy. Was really wet near Aberdeen...the standing water did make the running birds fly, though. I guess I'll take that optimistic view.

I drove through Watertown on my way back from Clark on Sunday and the fields are still really wet. Before we left Clark we spoke with our friend who owns the farm we hunt and he didn't have much hope that the beans and corn would dry out anytime soon.

Conditions are as you'd imagine given the recent weather. Ditches filled with water, fields (CRP, beans, corn) are mostly soggy to soaked - some even with considerable amounts of standing water. We had to really work for our birds. While we saw numerous birds, they'd quickly move to the corn when pressured and if you've ever hunted six - seven foot tall corn you know how successful that's going to be.

On a related note, I saw a TON of deer...

I just posted this in the Main Forum but maybe it's more appropriate here.

The weekly South Dakota crop report from the US Separt. of Ag was in this morning's paper. The reports says 40% of the soybean crop has been harvested. The 5 year average is 88%. Corn harvest is 9% complete, the 5 year average is 38%. So you can see we are way behind and the weather conditions this week won't help much.

It is a little spotty and we are getting some crops out the last three days. Unfortunately the rain starts west again tomorrow and moves east as per usual. Some farmers swithed heads and are going after corn, probly to meet ethanol contracts.

I talked to a custom harvester that I used to work for lastnight, He is in Redfield and just started cutting beans again lastnight. He said he has cut 4 days this month, not a good sign for the crops being out anytime soon:(

Any new updates on the amount of beans or corn in the fileds around Watertown ( or even how wet the fields or ditches are)? We leave wed at 2 am to hunt wed thru Saturday.

The first part of this week they got after the bean pretty good where they could get in the fields. But Thursday and Friday eastern South Dakota got another inch of rain and snow mix. So it's wet, wet, wet. On the positive side, it was a beautiful day today with sun and temps in the mid 40's. The forecast for next week is great. No moisture, sunny and temps in the 50's. In fact the forecast for the whole month of November is for above average temps. You will have nice weather but you will have to contend with the water. Good luck.

My dog was going crazy yesterday when I put all my hunting clothes in the washer...follows me around the house like crazy. Leaving early in the morning for a quick 15 hour drive from Kentucky. My butt is sore just thinking about it. Anyone here going to the Platte/ Charles Mix county area this week?
